Searching (7/10)

Review Solid plot (+1) Love John Cho (+1/2) Met expectations (+0) Convincing acting (+1/2) This is a serious thriller featuring an actor I really like (John Cho) in the role of a smart father desperately looking for his daughter, who has mysteriously disappeared. The investigation is clever, the clues to what is really going on […]

Crazy Rich Asians (7/10)

Review Great character & cast (+1) Great sense of humor (+1) Slightly predictable plot (-1/2) Makes you want to visit Singapore (+1/2) A delightful movie, surprising and endearing all at once. Did not expect much, turns out to be a very good surprise. It’s like “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” with Asian folk. Score: 7/10

Mission Impossible – Fallout (3.5/10)

Review How many MI has it been yet? Four? Five? A dozen? I’m a glutton for punishment (also, there really was nothing else to see), so I inflicted this dull, unimaginative movie upon myself. What was I thinking? It had a few good moments (mostly featuring Henry Cavill or Simon Pegg), but I should have […]

Papillon (6.5/10)

Review I’ve never seen the original, and that’s probably a good thing. When the first (1973) version is portrayed by Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, the bar is set pretty high. I’ve also never read the book, so I approached this with a fresh eye. It’s a good story, and I’m a big fan of […]

Incredibles 2 (7/10)

Review Some 14 years later, Pixar finally releases the second installment of this amazing movie, and despite how long we had to wait, for the Parr family it picks up exactly where it left off in the original. Great story, great visuals, it’s worth the wait, even though it’s not quite as good as the […]

Mile 22 (5/10)

Review Yet another movie featuring a lot of chases and combat scenes. Unlike the much-hated Bourne series (hated by me), the combats aren’t marred by a VomitCam™ and the fights are definitely worth the price of admission. But plot-wise, it failed to surprise me, and I mercifully slept through a good 20 minutes of the […]

Three Identical Strangers (8/10)

Review This is a documentary, not a script or an adaptation of a novel, but it might as well be. What starts as a startling coincidence turns into an amazing story that is sure to leave you shocked, outraged, and more than a little sad. Score: 8/10
